Artist Statement

Human beings have been telling stories ever since we have existed. For this art piece I decided to tell some of my story through visual representation. Through the process of ‘going down the rabbit hole’ of my past I experienced witnessing my journey and holding my story with compassion. Being witnessed is a powerful form of healing. For hundreds of years people lived in tribes surrounded by their community. In modern day society in America there is a mental health epidemic, and this is partly due to people being dis-connected from their communities and themselves. Isolation and not being seen or heard is prevalent in our society. We can change the world one person at a time by witnessing each other and listening to each other’s stories. This is the path to healing and peace.

“Feel It” 2025

Acrylic, Mixed Media, and Found Objects on Canvas

36” height x 47.5” width

Artist Statement

This painting is the result of deciding to finally feel it, to stop numbing, and to face my sleeping heart. After layers of paint, writing on the canvas, applying paper and various objects I realized that hope lies deep below the pain….like a seed buried deep beneath the frozen earth. The process of this painting was an effort to face the accumulation of pain in my heart that had gathered there from a divorce, from broken friendships, from repetitive sexual harassment, from childhood abuse, from deep grief. For years I ignored what my heart was telling me, not only the pain but also the whispers of my deepest desires, passions, and what gave me joy. Over my life I have witnessed not only myself do this, but others so often ignore their suffering, putting their heart to sleep. I believe it is time to listen and to feel it.
